Traditional Thai massage is an ancient healing system that uses a combination of techniques that include acupressure, assisted yoga postures and reflexology to promote the flow of energy throughout pathways within the body known as Sen. Unlike other forms of massage, there are no oils or lotions used with Thai massage, and clients remain fully clothed as the practitioner focuses on moving their body to clear blockages and allow energy to flow. The practice of Thai massage is viewed as having spiritual and physical benefits that can enhance the wellbeing of both the client and the practitioner.
Benefits of Thai Massage
Practitioners of Thai massage view it as a spiritual practice that teaches mindfulness and compassion. As you support your client’s body through stretches and guided breathing, you will develop a rapport that provides a deep sense of rejuvenation and spiritual bonding. Improved muscle strength, emotional stability and relaxation are all additional benefits that are received through Thai massage. As your clients progress through the system, you will learn how to introduce more challenging stretches and poses that allow them to continue to strengthen their response to your sessions.
Understanding the Theory
To be an effective practitioner of Thai massage, you will first need to understand the theory behind the practice. In the beginning, you will learn about the origin of this technique that goes back more than 2,000 years in the past. This will include you gaining a basic understanding of the energy theory, which is a fundamental part of Traditional Thai Medicine. Once you understand the locations of the principal Sen lines and recognize the Four Divine States, you will be ready to learn how to apply the techniques that can open up these pathways and encourage energy to flow.
Managing a Session
As a practitioner, you will be responsible for creating a relaxing environment during Thai massage sessions that sets the scene for total rejuvenation. During your online course, you will learn how to position yourself as a practitioner so that your clients receive the highest benefits from the session. You will learn about the types of strokes and movements you will be performing along with the best ways to set up a session that is tailored to your client’s level of experience with Thai massage.
Putting it Into Practice
Hands-on experience is the best way to learn Thai massage, and you will be able to work through the course while practicing on a partner. Using videos, step-by-step guides and illustrations, you will be taught the steps to be performed in each massage sequence to provide the most benefits. During these lessons, you will also understand the different effects that may be achieved through varying your techniques along with the benefits that you and your client can expect. You will also be able to repeat each new technique as many times as you need to be confident that it is being performed correctly. This is one of the greatest benefits of an online course in Thai massage because you can go at your own pace and revisit lessons as often as you prefer.
Hands-On Practice Requirements
Traditional Thai massage is more convenient than Western techniques because it can be done virtually anywhere that you have space to perform the movements. Ideally, you should have a comfortable, flat surface such as the floor or a low futon or mat. Since you and your client will be moving into different positions, it is recommended to wear loose clothing that allows for maximum comfort during movement. You will also need a partner of course. However, most students find that they have many willing partners available who are eager to enjoy the benefits that traditional Thai massage can have for their physical and emotional wellbeing.
